A simple guide to understanding management fees, MERs and investment costs

You heard that Vanguard has reduced its management fee for several offerings, but when you check the fund’s website, its management expense ratio, or MER, may seem different than you expected. What happened?

A fund’s management fee and MER are closely related, but they are not the same thing. The management fee may have changed immediately, while the published MER still reflects expenses from an earlier reporting period. The simplest way to remember the difference is: A management fee tells you what the fund charges now. An MER is published with a lag, telling you what the fund’s expenses were over a past reporting period. Let’s take a closer look.

Management fee

The management fee is the amount paid to the fund manager for managing the fund.

Management expense ratio (MER)

The MER is a broader measure of the fund’s expenses over a completed financial period.

It generally includes:

  • the management fee*
  • operating and administrative expenses
  • applicable taxes
  • certain expenses associated with underlying funds

The MER is calculated as a percentage of the fund’s daily average net asset value during the reporting period. When a management fee is reduced, investors generally begin benefiting from the lower fee from its effective date. However, the MER continues to measure expenses over a completed financial period.

That means it can take a full financial reporting period before the MER reflects an entire year under the lower management fee. This could also lead to a difference between the annual MER and semi-annual MER as semi-annual MER is based on annualized expenses from the most recent six-month reporting period.

*inclusive of the management fee waiver where applicable
