We're so excited to celebrate 25 years of Vanguard Advisor's Alpha and our partnership with you, the advisor community. This milestone felt like the perfect time to reflect on how much this business has evolved.
When we at Vanguard entered the space 25 years ago, the landscape looks much different. Higher fees, suboptimal fund selection methods, and a more transactional approach to client relationships. Back then, the primary value proposition for advisors was attempting to outperform the market. Fast forward to today and the picture has changed dramatically for the better. The focus has shifted away from low-probability, negative-sum activities such as chasing hot funds, and attempting to outperform without any thought given to costs.
Instead, today we see more higher-probability, positive-sum activities such as financial planning, tax optimization, and behavior coaching. It's a transformation we at Vanguard have been thrilled to witness and influence. It truly represents a fundamental change in wealth management, prioritizing evidence-based strategies that fall within the control of investors and advisors.
Bottom line, it's brought about a material improvement in both advised client outcomes and advisory practice outcomes. Clients are keeping more of the returns that they earn, and in turn, advisors are benefiting from higher assets under management along with increased client satisfaction, retention, and referrals. Put simply, better results for you and for your clients.
While the industry has made significant strides, we still see many opportunities to add value. For instance, in the democratization of fixed income, scaling tax planning strategies like tax loss harvesting, and providing estate planning services.
Looking ahead, we're extremely optimistic about the Vanguards partnership with the advisory community. We know that it will continue to thrive, but we'll also continue to drive meaningful improvement in end-investor outcomes.
